| Description | Using a zoom lens. I knew I'd find a use for the kit lens. From 14mm through to 150mm I pointed it at a ruler and focussed on the ruler at a constant distance of 50cm. This has been developed without sharpening, cropped and combined and a 'Find Edges' filter applied to highlight the sharpest portions. As you zoom in, the acceptable depth of field as modelled by the 'Find Edges' filter has decreased. At 150mm the depth of field is about 1.5-2cm at 50 cm at the best magnification this lens can manage, about 1:4. According to the EXIF data the depth of field from widest to longest focal length is 25cm, 13cm, 3cm, 6mm, 1mm. That seems narrower than I'd estimate, but it illustrates the narrowing with longer focal lengths and hence why a 300 macro lens is unlikely to be usable. |
